Tranwell Farm is a small, family-run glamping site set in tranquil woodland and open farmland just two miles from the historic market town of Morpeth, in the heart of Northumberland. Accommodation includes cosy glamping,  woodland lodges with private hot tubs and a spacious accessible self-catering cottage — a peaceful, dog-friendly glampsite for families, couples and solo travellers who want space, quiet and easy access to the countryside.  Guests can wander the on-site nature trail and farm walks, meet the rare breed sheep, take a stroll with the dog around the dedicated dog walking field, and join small-scale workshops run by local makers and creatives.

Morpeth itself is a two-mile trip, with its covered arcade shopping, independent craft shops, tea rooms, Wednesday market, Carlisle Park and the Northumbrian Bagpipe Museum. Newcastle is around 15 minutes south, and the wider county opens up from there — Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Cragside, Wallington Hall, Hadrian’s Wall, the Cheviot Hills, and Northumberland’s sweep of empty sandy beaches and dark night skies.

Sustainability runs through the whole operation. The eco lodges are off-grid and solar-powered, timber is sustainably sourced, and cleaning products are chosen with the land in mind. That commitment has earned Tranwell Farm a Green Tourism Gold Award, alongside back-to-back wins for Camping, Glamping and Holiday Park of the Year at the North East Tourism Awards.

For those travelling with their own setup, the farm also offers off-grid pitches for tents, campervans and motorhomes.

WOODLAND LODGES
Oak Lodge and Ash Lodge are two secluded Scandinavian-inspired woodland lodges, each sleeping four and open all year. Cosy, comfortable and furnished with a mix of modern and upcycled pieces that reflect the farm’s sustainable approach. Patio doors open onto a fully fenced woodland garden with direct access to the dog walking field beyond the gate, and the nature trail winds through the farm from there. Parking right by the door with room for three vehicles.

POPPY’S HUT
Poppy’s Hut is a shepherd’s hut on a meadow pitch with open countryside views and walks straight from the door. Oak floors and natural décor keep it calm and contemporary, with a wood-burning stove for colder evenings and a deck for morning coffee.

GLAMPING PODS
Rosie and Hawthorn are two rustic camping pods on small meadow pitches with countryside views and walks from the door. Each has a log-burning stove, a full-size double bed and a private outdoor seating area with fire pit — a simple, comfortable way to camp without the faff. Bring your own bedding, pillows and charcoal; everything else is there.

BELLE TENTS
Two spacious 5m bell tents sit on the meadow with countryside views and walks straight from the door. Each sleeps a family of four with a double bed and two children’s camp beds, and a log-burning stove keeps things warm inside. There’s dining space indoors and out, plus a fire pit and gas stove for cooking under the sky. Bring your own bedding, pillows and charcoal — everything else is provided.

• Log-burning stove with a starter bucket of logs and firelighting kit
• Dining table and chairs inside, plus outdoor dining table and chairs

• Cool box, with ice blocks available from the freezer in the welcome hut

• Use of the shepherd’s hut toilet and shower block
• Access to the farm nature walk

ACTIVITES AND WORKSHOPS

Tranwell Farm runs a small programme of workshops and animal experiences alongside the accommodation, hosted by the family and by local artists and makers. It’s a chance to slow down, learn something with your hands, or spend an hour or two with the farm’s animals — and you don’t need to be staying to take part, though a glamping or camping pitch makes an easy add-on.

Farm and workshop experiences include:

• Meet the Lambs — one-hour session meeting the lambs and expectant ewes, with a chance to bottle-feed or even see a birth. £8 per person, maximum five people, 5pm–6pm, April dates.
• Coloured Ryeland Sheep Experience — two hours meeting, grooming and learning about the farm’s pedigree rare breed flock, followed by a farm walk with the family. £20 per person, maximum five people, 1pm–3pm, April and May dates.
• The sheep featured on Robson Green’s Weekend Escapes, Series 3.
• Frame Basket Willow Weaving — full-day workshop, 10am to 3pm, led by local artist Ruth Thompson of Sylvan Skills. Suitable for beginners and experienced weavers alike; all materials, tools and light refreshments included. £40 per person, maximum ten. 2026 dates to be confirmed.
• Stargazing kit hire — binoculars, a rug, hot water bottles, a flask and the Philips stargazing guide, to make the most of Northumberland’s dark skies.

Booking is essential for the animal sessions, and places are limited. Local makers and creatives interested in running their own workshops at the farm are welcome to get in touch. Prices subject to change from year to year.

LOCAL AREA

Tranwell Farm sits three miles from Morpeth — a 30–40 minute walk, or a short hop on the 777 bus from a stop five minutes from the site. Morpeth itself has an arcade shopping centre, craft and artisan shops, tea rooms and restaurants, plus Carlisle Park with its riverside gardens, rowing boats and the climb up to Morpeth Castle.

The county opens up in every direction from there. The white sandy beaches of the Northumberland coast are eight miles east, running north through Amble, Warkworth, Craster and Dunstanburgh Castle, Beadnell, Seahouses and the Farne Islands boat trips, Bamburgh Castle and tidal Holy Island. Newcastle and Gateshead are twelve miles south for museums, galleries and Eldon Square shopping. Alnwick is around nineteen miles north, home to Alnwick Castle, The Alnwick Garden and its treehouse, Lilidorei and Barter Books. To the west lie Hadrian’s Wall, Vindolanda, Sycamore Gap and the Hareshaw Linn waterfalls. Closer to hand are Whitehouse Farm, Kirkley Hall Zoo, Woodhorn Museum, and National Trust properties at Cragside, Wallington Hall and Seaton Delaval Hall.

The farm is well set up for car-free days out. The 777 bus connects to Morpeth for the town, Carlisle Park and the train to Newcastle (15–20 minutes), while the X18 from Morpeth bus station runs to Warkworth, Amble and Alnwick — enough to build a full day at the coast, in the city or at the castle without touching the car.

The campsite is run as a Greener Camping Club certified site, so a club membership is needed to book — family or individual membership costs £12.
