Glamping in France at Featherdown Farm in the Manche area of Normandy has plenty of history to go with it. The Moricière family has owned the farm for more than 200 years! Today, they run an organic dairy farm with a herd of Normandy cows and their calves. There are also pigs, chickens and goats living there too.
The family would be delighted to share their farming knowledge with you, including the art of cheese making. Their own famous local cheese is the “Pont L’Evêque”. It was apparently first made by monks, and probably the oldest Norman cheese still in production! If you want, Yves and Sylvie would be more than happy to give you informed recommendations on the best local Manche cheeses to buy.
The Moriciere family not only run the farm but are also tour guides. They take small groups of people on foot across the extraordinary bay near to the farm. They are passionate about environmental issues in the area and love to restore old buildings using organic and eco-friendly elements, such as bricks made from raw material. The three individual hot showers and “le Cellier”, (the honesty shop), are a charming example of these techniques.
Your children will enjoy hanging out with Yves and Sylvie’s sons, Thomas and Clément, as they know all the best secret play areas on the farm where the children can build dens! Be sure to meet Toupie, the friendly farm dog and Bidouille the cat who has yet to catch a mouse! There is always something happening on this farm holiday to join in with, such as wooden fence mending, firewood chopping and organic vegetable gardening. Don’t be afraid to get stuck in!
The Moricières would like you to think of your stay with them as a cultural exchange. Using a combination of English and clear French to communicate, all will know each others’ languages and cultures a little better!
