Blackdown Yurts Blackdown Hills Devon

At Blackdown Yurts in Devon we offer four beautiful yurts, sitting on their own decking bases covered in coir matting to keep the interiors warm and dry. Buzzard and Willow are traditional Mongolian yurts, whereas Badger and Woodpecker have been upgraded with wooden clad sides.  Willow is our little yurt, sleeping up to 4, the other three are larger and sleep up to 6. One bed in each of the six sleepers can be put away to create space for a travel cot, dog crate/bed or just more floor space if required.

Yurt guests have use of the communal barn and private bathrooms with hot showers a short walk away across the car park. We also welcome well-behaved dogs at Blackdown Yurts.

THE YURTS
If needed, one or two of the single beds in the 6 person yurts or one of the single beds in the 4 person yurt can be put away to make more space, for example for travel cots (we can one provide if necessary) or dog beds.

BADGER YURT – Sleeps up to 6 people
Looking out across open fields to the Blackdown Hills, Badger is situated in the main yurt field next to Woodpecker, but it has its own private space, enclosed by a high Devon bank scattered with wild flowers giving privacy and sound proofing.  The yurt includes –

  • Kingsize double bed
  • Four singles
  • Bedding and bed linen
  • Colourful wall hangings, bed throws and floor rugs
  • Wood-burning stove will keep you warm and cosy
  • Cool box per yurt with two ice-blocks
  • Camp Kitchen & Composting Loo
  • Private bathroom and fridge with freezer box in the nearby communal barn

BUZZARD YURT – Sleeps up to 6
Set in the meadow, where paths have been mown into a little maze. Wildflowers and butterflies abound during Spring and Summer and during Autumn the hedgerow behind Buzzard is a brilliant spot for blackberrying.

Although Buzzard is the furthest yurt from the car park and communal barn/showers, it is still not very far. The yurt includes –

  • Kingsize double bed
  • Four singles
  • Bedding and bed linen
  • Colourful wall hangings, bed throws and floor rugs
  • Wood-burning stove will keep you warm and cosy
  • Cool box per yurt with two ice-blocks
  • Camp Kitchen & Composting Loo
  • Private bathroom and fridge with freezer box in the nearby communal barn

WILLOW YURT – Sleeps up to 4
Willow is set in the corner of a level field with lovely views. It sits on a wooden deck and is surrounded by a hedge of willow coppice. This is a private, cosy space for a couple or small family. It is the closest yurt to the shared barn and showers and the car park.  The yurt includes –

  • Double bed
  • Two singles (2ft6in wide, suitable for children)
  • Bedding and bed linen
  • Wall hangings, bed throws and floor rugs
  • Wood-burning stove will keep you warm and cosy
  • Cool box per yurt with two ice-blocks
  • Camp Kitchen & Composting Loo
  • Private bathroom and fridge with freezer box in the nearby communal barn

WOODPECKER YURT – Sleeps up to 6
Woodpecker has open views across fields to the Blackdown Hills and is situated in the main field next to Badger, but it has its own private space enclosed by a high Devon bank scattered with wild flowers giving privacy and sound proofing. The yurt includes –

  • Kingsize double bed
  • Four singles
  • Bedding and bed linen
  • Colourful wall hangings, bed throws and floor rugs
  • Wood-burning stove will keep you warm and cosy
  • Cool box per yurt with two ice-blocks
  • Camp Kitchen & Composting Loo
  • Private bathroom and fridge with freezer box in the nearby communal barn

EACH YURT HAS ITS OWN CAMP KITCHEN beside the yurt and includes

  • A camping gas stove with two hobs and a small oven
  • All cutlery, utensils, crockery and cooking equipment
  • Washing up station
  • Kettle barbeque (starter amount of charcoal provided)
  • Fire pit (wood supplied for log burners and fire pits)
  • Outdoor furniture (table and benches) and parasol
  • Fresh water is on tap outside

ON SITE FACILITIES

COMPOST LOOS FOR EACH YURT
Each yurt has its own compost loo and urinal right next door (perfect for night-time wees!). They are just like regular toilets but no need to flush. A handful of sawdust is all that’s needed but only after a number 2. You can put loo paper in the compost toilets but nothing else.

BATHROOMS
Each yurt has its own beautifully-crafted shower-room in the communal barn, with hot and cold water hand basins, hot showers and conventional flushing toilets. Bespoke hooks for your towels and clothes and a large bench for your shoes, belongings and little bottoms mean there is lots of space for you and the family to cleanse in comfort. A step stool is provided to help little ones reach the basins for teeth brushing and a baby bath can be provided on request.

THE BARN
The communal barn has all you need to cook, dine and lounge in comfort. Perfect if the weather isn’t all its meant to be, if you are catering for a large group, or if you’d simply rather not use your camp kitchen.

The kitchen area has all mod cons including four separate fridges, one for each yurt. Each has a freezer compartment to chill ice blocks (or ice-cream!). There is an electric kettle, microwave and toaster. Three large gas rings make cooking for a crowd a doddle. Hot water is available for washing up in the two large sinks (washing up liquid, sponges, cloths and tea towels provided for your convenience.

A huge wooden table and benches allows you to seat around 22 people to eat with no trouble. The barn also has a lovely large wood burner and comfy sofas for relaxing, making sure it is cosy whatever the weather. Wood and firelighting equipment is provided.

In addition, the barn has electricity for charging devices, plugging in some music (not provided and please be considerate of other guests and neighbours by not playing music loud late at night), and twinkly lights for night time.

If you are planning a party, talk with Katie about how previous groups have decorated and used the barn.

DOGS
We welcome well-behaved dogs as we know how important it is for you to be able to travel with the whole family and enjoy the wealth of walking and other outdoor activities available in the Blackdown Hills and elsewhere in Devon with your pooch.
