Glamping Dorset

Escape to the country at Black Pig Retreats and enjoy a real get-away-from-it-all break. This wonderful site is part of Bittles Brook Farm, an equestrian facility, and you can encounter the Owners’ dogs, horses, chickens and sheep too, if you wish. As the name suggests, though, the star attraction of this small holding is Beauty, the Large Black pig, who thinks she’s a dog and inspired the welcoming, relaxed nature of this charming place. Carrying on the theme, the beautiful tents are also named and uniquely styled after breeds of black pigs from around the world – Mukota (a breed from northern Zimbabwe), Murciano (a breed from Murcia, Spain) and Gascon (a breed from the Midi-Pyrenees region of France). As soon as you reach the car park and take in the rolling countryside, you will feel your shoulders drop. There’s plenty of space for a game of rounders or a kickabout and you can explore the surrounding woodlands and trails until your heart’s content. The dog can even join you too! Or how about just sitting back on your very own raised deck with a glass of something and gazing at the incredible views over Blackmore Vale? Perfect. In-keeping with the ethos of this back-to-nature place, you can minimise your carbon footprint here, treading lightly on the land and really switching off – phone reception is limited (EE 4G is available at the top of the farm) and so is electricity, just powering the fridge, lights and a mobile phone charger, if needed.

Nestled in a wildflower meadow beside a little brook, separate to the other two tents, South-African-themed Mukota provides plenty of room for up to four guests. The sleeping arrangements consist of a king-size bed and twins beds, and the spacious living area is complete with a comfy sofa, dining-table and well-equipped kitchen, boasting a two-ring gas hob, fridge and sink. Cosy evenings in are a given thanks to a toasty wood-burner, which also doubles up as your main cooking appliance. The en suite shower-room comes in the form of a quirky converted horsebox, accessed off the bedroom, with double shower, wash-basin, heated towel rail and flushing loo. Also in the meadow with Mukota is an eco-built games-room, shared with the other two luxury safari tents.

Set together in a wildflower meadow but private from each other, there’s space to sleep up to six inside each of these spacious Spanish and French themed tents, the sleeping arrangements consisting of a king-size bed, twin beds and a super cute cabin bed. In the living area you’ll find a comfy sofa, dining-table and kitted-out kitchen complete with a two-ring gas hob, fridge and sink. Toasty toes are guaranteed thanks to the cosy wood-burner, doubling up as your main cooking appliance. And of course there are en suite facilities including a double shower and a cloakroom with wash-basin, heated towel rail and flushing loo. There is also the bonus of an eco-built straw games-room situated in the lower meadow with Mukota and shared between all three tents – fun for all!

  • Dogs welcome
  • Travel cot and high chair
  • Private parking for 1 car (Mukota) and 2 cars (Murciano and Gascon)
  • Patio furniture and fire-pit barbecue
  • Logs for wood-fired range

This really is a great base for exploring, if you can bear to tear yourself away! Close to home, a gentle 20 minute walk will take you along tracks and lanes to the village shop and pub. A short drive will take you to the hilltop town of Shaftesbury, with its array of independent shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. Around a half an hour drive will take you to mystical Stonehenge, Longleat Safari Park – a great day out, the Cathedral City of Salisbury or the National Trust’s historic Stourhead House. A little further are the Georgian City of Bath with its plentiful shops and historic spas, the sandy beaches of Weymouth and Sandbanks and the fascinating Jurassic Coast – take a visit to Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. If you fancy some exercise, how about taking a bike ride through the nearby New Forest National Park – you can bring your own bikes or hire them locally at Burley or Brockenhurst.
